The boarding school feature from The Sims 3: Generations wasn't updated to include any new skills, careers, or traits from subsequent expansion packs, so I originally made this mod to fix that.

Then I realized that there were also some base game traits and careers missing, as well as most of the hidden skills, so I added those too!

This is a tuning mod that can be placed in your Overrides folder.

Summary: An overheard conversation changes the way Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian part before he ascends Baoshan Sangren's mountain. From that point onwards, things go differently. Kay's comments: The story that made me fall in love with Ilona22 as a writer! I was immediately gone, the story was just too much to my liking. I'm just so weak for stories where Wei Wuxian thrives outside of the cultvation sects. Here, he leaves after the Golden Core transfer, because Jiang Cheng told him to get lost. Luckily, he soon finds his footing again without a trip to the Burial Mounds, since he didn't wait around for Jiang Cheng. Thanks to Wen Qing, he even has the hope to cultivate a new golden core, but for now, he finds a new profession, as a travelling painter. Meanwhile, Lan Wangji pines. I loved how the canon divergence played out in this story and just the found family vibes of it all. Excerpt: The during their conversation, they had all introduced themselves, too. The monk was Lu Lei, the other man was Lu Zhao. The later was an artist and calligrapher of some renown, Wei Ying had admired one of his paintings on Jiang-Zongzhu’s wall in his study. Lu Lei was the abbot of his monastery. The two of them new each other for a long time, and Lu Zhao had painted for the other on several occasions. Though he was more known for his paintings of plants and scenery. Lu Lei was highly skilled in the healing arts. And unwilling to let his patient escape, especially as he had saved both of them. As Wei Ying had guessed, neither was even slightly skilled at fighting. And so, Wei Ying agreed to travel with them. It turned out to be a good decision. Over the next two weeks, he rested and recovered, spending a lot of time talking with the two men. It were long conversations, often about heavy topics, as Wei Ying finally had the time to grieve the friends he had lost during the fall of Lotus Pier, and to adjust to the changes his life had gone through in such a short time. But they also had a lot of fun discussing art styles and philosophy. Lu Lei and him had several long talks about cultivation, and it was fascinating to learn more about the non-martial styles practiced by monks. Lu Lei was interested in his thoughts about talismans. The first time someone was so willing to talk about the branch of cultivation Wei Ying had always quietly hoped to be able to eventually gain his mastery in. In Lotus Pier, that would have been difficult. But now, he had realized during those conversations, there was no reason not to pursue that path. And so, slowly, he had come to look forward to this new chapter in his life.

Mikey knew first. He and Donnie had walked into the city together. Donnie had eyed the duffle bag he was carrying curiously, but didn’t question. Donnie was the only one who knew Mikey was sneaking around the Hidden City putting up murals. In fact, Mikey knew for a fact that one of his murals was the background on Donnie’s phone screen. They hadn’t exactly spoken about it, but Donnie liked to take pictures of the murals he found that he knew were Mikey’s and send them to him, usually with silly emojis to show his appreciation for them.

Mikey loved those texts.

Mikey loved Donnie.

He knew it wasn’t exactly nice to have a favorite sibling, but he considered Donnie his favorite. Donnie understood the pressure of trying to get someone to recognize your skill. He felt like if he had his baby brother with him, they could do anything. They’d take the Hidden City by storm with their creativity and genius. One day Donnie was gonna be a famous inventor and he was going to be a famous artist and they’d be drowning in fan mail!

“K-keep yourself safe t-t-today, okay?” Donnie smiled at him.

“I’ll be fine!” Mikey laughed, “I got my badass ninja skills to keep me safe.”

The town center was busy today. Mikey pulled them to a more quiet section of street, putting himself between Donnie and anyone else. He held out his hand for a moment, just in case, but Donnie didn’t take it.

“Where you headed?” He asked.

“Library.”

“Nerd.” Mikey snickered, “They decided to crown you king of the books yet?”

Donnie rolled his eyes, but didn’t answer.

“Can I have a sip of your water?” He asked as they approached the library entrance, “I’m thirsty.”

He groaned when he felt Donnie’s knee come up, getting him in the side. It wasn’t anything too unusual, the four of them loved to roughhouse. He caught his breath easy, didn’t think anything of it, until he looked up and saw Donnie fleeing into the building proper.

He couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty.

He turned and started making his way back through the streets. The spot he’d chosen was across town from the library, so he wouldn’t be walking home with Donnie.

He chewed on his lip as he weaved through the crowds. He shouldn’t have joked like that. He knew Donnie was bad about germs and stuff, and he clearly wasn’t having the best mental health day given how much he’d retreated into himself. Plus, he’d run away so fast…

Maybe he should go back and apologize. His therapist said that the only way to move past a mistake was to first own up to the mistake.

Halting that train of thought. They don’t think like that anymore. Donnie was allowed to feel the way he felt, even if it was different.

He’d been thinking on this for too long. It was obviously bothering him, so he should go and at least tell Donnie he was sorry for upsetting him.

He turned around and started his way back to the library. By now he was a decent ways away, but it was worth it to make sure Donnie was okay. After all, the creative ones had to stick together. If Donnie ended up actually being mad at him, he wouldn’t be in the right headspace for any kind of painting until it was resolved. No one fucked with his baby brother anymore, especially not Mikey himself.

He pushed into the library and signed in as a visitor. He fished his phone out of his duffle bag and left it at the bag drop-off, quickly texting Donnie to ask what section he was in.

He wandered towards the research section. They’d been here with him a couple times with him and it was always confusing. How was he supposed to find Donnie in this damn mess.

His phone pinged.

He approached a desk, talking with a rabbit yokai about finding his sibling. Thankfully, the rabbit knew of Donnie and pointed him in the direction of Donnie’s favorite study spot.

He hurried that way, a bit of excitement building in him. Well, maybe he wouldn’t work on a mural today, but he could hang out with Donnie instead. Sure, it wasn’t always fun, but now he wanted to see his bro.

He spotted Donnie at a secluded desk, laying down in his chair, his arms pillowing his head. Did he fall asleep as soon as he got here? He didn’t even have a book with him.

“Yo, Don?” Mikey whispered as he approached, smiling, “You good, bro?”

Donnie didn’t reply.

His water bottle was knocked over on the floor, drained empty.

Fic idea that I’m posting here because it’s ass-o’clock and my phone’s notes function wasn’t open. This won’t make any sense to anyone sry:

Wanxian (with a side of Jiang Chang and Wen Qing)

- Genius artist and inventor Wei Ying also neurotypical AF because childhood trauma caused him all sorts of issues but also taught him to think in entirely new and inventive ways. His art is a literal insane mishmash of performance, found object collections, activism, and gorgeous weird shit like mini dioramas that are batshit crazy and charming and gorgeous and fantasy maps of hilarious places (I dreamt this and was crying laughing in my dream, I hope I can replicate it)

- college roommates with sheltered but peaceful poetry student Lan Zhan, who at first is shocked that their dorm room has been turned into some sort of bizarro art installation but then meets Wei Ying and has his mind thoroughly blown. THEN he sees his actual giant theme park of an art exhibition and has his mind even more blown.

- Wei Ying is also always backstage hanging out with buddies at a local insanely cool club and music venue, being himself aka the center of everyone’s attention but kinda oblivious and just living his life on his own terms. LWJ happens to go there one night for a poetry slam, and sees Wei Ying walking back stage and has a gay panic about it but still recites the poem he wrote inspired by his feelings for WWX. It’s vague enough so that WWX has no clue but he does have his own mind blown a little.

- Along with being an artist, WWX is also a genius scientist and is helping program an unmanned spacecraft at a science buddy’s request (Huisang maybe?)

- Then shit gets bad. The spacecraft blows up and kills several people in the vicinity, and word leaks out that an unauthorized person who isn’t even a real scientist was involved in the programming. WWX obviously gets blamed. He becomes withdrawn and self isolates, looking more and more unhinged, and by this point, far out of college, Lan Zhan can only worry from a distance because WWX keeps pushing him away.

- The only person WWX really doesn’t push away is Wen Qing’s baby cousin. Because of this, the Wen siblings have to watch him slowly shut down and destroy himself. No longer creating, hardly existing, no longer interested in activism, he’s just given up. He gets daily harassment and death threats from strangers. He goes on a talk show in order to use the chance not to address his own scandal but to bring attention to an actual cause he used to support wholeheartedly. He blows it, basically letting Jiang Cheng, Wen Ning, and Wen Qing do the work while remaining silent.

- Jiang Cheng blows a fuse about him giving up, but Wen Qing and Wen Ning decide to fix him by figuring out what really happened to the spacecraft because they don’t believe WWX would or could fuck that up. They enlist Huisang and investigate. Lan Zhan volunteers too.

- Shocker, it turns out that it was Meng Yao, who then framed WWX by anonymously releasing the story to the press.

- I haven’t figured out the aftermath, and I’m open to ideas

- But basically WWX comes back to himself, gets together with Lan Zhan, and goes back to being an amazing creative genius weirdo. Lan Zhan is just smug about everything. WWX and JC make up and JC and WQ get together (there’s a whole crazy subplot to this that I’m too tired to write now so I hope I remember it but basically she saved his life as a child. And they both were unaware it was the other of that time. JC is currently in a bad relationship and WQ is lowkey in love with WWX but knows she doesn’t have a chance so she promotes him to free didi status.

“Cardboard flat” Xina Kwan was not cardboard flat, definitely not infact that’s why us fans love her so much and it is obvious this answer was aimed at her as a character because the question asked directly mentioned Xina Kwan.

She was a genius inventor that was smarter than Miguel who created/fixed Lyla, she was obsessed with retro things to the point she wanted her car even to be retro, she could stand up for herself and knew how to put Miguel in place, being able to insult him and Dana for things they’ve done and it’s not shown so much in a negative her carrying on way but a funny way of her messing with them for the hurt they caused. She studied aliens as well her entire life, trying to find out if they existed. She had complex emotions, even if Miguel’s love interest for a lot of time she didn’t even care about being with him, the most she wanted out of him was a sexual encounter in Mexico, she suffered human emotions like any character would, being conflicted about Miguel wanting to kill an alien life form even if it hurt her, and having survivors guilt when Dana had passed, looking past all her hatred for Dana to feel sorrow. She was so smart and gifted that even doom admired her and believed her to be amazing, with his last message to her being about how the state would treat her well and how she could have what she wanted from them due to how amazing she was for them. Showing her strength and ability to please even doom

And let’s not look past her childhood, where she helped shape Miguel to the way he was, helping him learn to stand up for himself, soon helping him want to go to court against Kron, helping him be nosey to listen in to what would happen, something someone that is cardboard wouldn’t do.

She had a sense of humour, guilts, strong emotions, the smarts not even Miguel had

Yes she had her flaws, any POC from old comic books do, there are times when the artist even forget she’s Asian and give her brown hairs and green eyes! Something that I hate about the comics, but she isn’t cardboard flat. And she deserved to not be “disposable.” She deserves to come back as a proper character that marvel doesn’t forget about, because without her, you wouldn’t have the Miguel that is in the 1992 comics, and without the miguel in the 1992 comics you wouldn’t have any of the comics with him in it, or any of the games with him in it, or any of the movies with him in it. Xina helped form and shape the man you love so much. (Let’s not pretend that parts of ATSV Miguel aren’t based off of 1992 when they are)

Also let’s not pretend you don’t like her cause she’s cardboard flat, or written badly. the opinion on Xina is because the idea of Miguel being with a woman is so disgusting to you because it’s too straight even though everyone that ships her with miguel, or ships Lyla with Miguel do it because they are queer and just enjoy Miguel with the people/things he canonly loves in ways

[Review] Syberia (PS2)

A graphic adventure, emphasis on the graphics.

Another pick from my monthly retro game club, Syberia is a game I only knew by reputation. While it was developed by Microïds' Canadian division, it was creatively spearheaded by the Belgian comic artist Benoît Sokal who instilled some unique flavours into it. Exploring some similar territory to his earlier game Amerzone, this is a point and click adventure set in a slightly askew version of Europe.

To spare my wrist from pointing and clicking, I opted for the contemporary PS2 port, which has you directly controlling protagonist Kate Walker with the analogue stick, with interactable hotspots getting highlighted as you pass them. Unfortunately the lower resolution does a slight disservice to the visual design of this game, although not as drastically as the DS conversion (which bizarrely, the later ports were based on, I've been told).

The game makes heavy use of prerendered backdrops to depict the melancholic locales, with some clever FMV insets for motion, and 3D models layered on top only for the sparse few characters. It's all in service of building Sokal's imaginative world, a world of faded glory populated by eccentrics, all touched by Hans Voralberg, the object of Walker's quest. Her mundane task of finalising a contract for the sale of a factory transforming into an unexpected steampunk adventure is ripe for drama, although the game doesn't capitalise on it as well as it could have.

Kate's personal journey is supposed to be along the lines of a buttoned-up lawyer being challenged to embrace the passions of life, but this only vaguely bubbles along in the background so she just ends up coming off as rather bland. Occasional phone calls home are meant to flesh out her arc, but they only served to make me annoyed at her shouty boss, shallow friend, overbearing mother, and worst of all her nagging, whiny fiancé. On the other hand, Kate's companion on her trip is the clockwork automaton Oscar, a standout character who mechanically exhibits a soulful blend of fussy and sassy.

But the story really revolves around Hans, the savant syndrome genius inventor. His influence is felt at each of the stops in your journey, where you talk with those whose lives he has touched, and try to tinker with the mechanical marvels he left behind. His intricate clockwork creations have been integrated in the sleepy French village of Valadilene, the majestic Barrockstadt university, the ex-Soviet industrial wasteland of Komkolzgrad, and the Eastern European hotel at Aralbad. Truly the locations are the star of the game, each seemingly stuck in a bubble of the past, the rich detail making them feel real even through an aura of the surreal.

These places do get let down somewhat by often muted colour palettes, although arguably that ties into the theme of decline that permeates each. A bigger issue is the awkwardness of navigating them, with sometimes unclear traversal options, not to mention the pause between each flip screen as the next one loads. Sometimes the direction you're facing is completely inverted as you move between screens, such that your continued move input turns you around and may even move you straight back. I suppose this is a problem unique to joypad controls... Kate also gets around very slowly (even with the run button), and goes through laborious animations to line herself up with interactables, so the pace of gameplay can feel plodding.

Broader pacing issues are present to varying degrees. The first two chapters in particular have quite drawn-out and convoluted sequences of puzzles and fetch quests. It never gets as challenging as Myst or obtuse as Starship Titanic (two other adventure games I've played with a similar sense of style and prerendered graphics), so I never struggled too much but an occasional nudge from a guide was needed when I failed to see eye to eye with the designers. Dialogue scenes also slow things down with overly wordy prose that you have to comb relevant details out of.

So there's some flaws, but my biggest issue was with the scope of the game. It just doesn't tell a complete story, ending rather abruptly as Kate meets Hans in a location you've already been to. It feels like the decision to split the story up into two games left this one without a satisfying conclusion. Hans' (and the game's) mammoth fixation and the driving motivation to get to Syberia are utterly unpaid-off; Oscar doesn't even get to meet his creator before the game ends, despite that being brought up numerous times! It's simply half a game, and from what I've read the sequel has its own problems with failing to make Kate a compelling protagonist after completing what passes for her character arc, among other things.

But you know, no game is perfect. I still think there's a lot to love in Syberia. The atmosphere is thick and there's always striking visual design waiting around the next corner. Every location feels distinct and fascinating, and each has memorable characters and setpieces. It brings up some interesting ideas, even if it doesn't quite grapple with them as much as I wanted it to. If anything it makes me curious about Sokal's comics, although from a quick look I'm not sure any of them have been published in English! Sacre bleu!

"Separate the art from the artist" is so insulting to the artists too actually (and totally irrelevant to the question of financial support of said art, in the age of pirating). Have you ever seen as artist say who they are is irrelevant to their work? Why are you implying that what we create is so unspecific to us that you can ignore us. You are trying to extend the capitalistic alienation from our labour to something inherently resistant to commodification, as much as the system forces its monetization for artists to live (and I wish all domains stopped alienating production from its producers, but it's particularly egregious for art imo). It’s something given or sold to the public for them to give the meaning they see fit, and you can decide to discard the initial/intended meaning for yourself, but it was still born from the artist and specific to them, created with their intentions motivating it, their biases colouring each and every choice, it is ludicrous to argue it can be totally dismissed. Trying to erase our role is downright offensive and akin to failing to credit properly. Copyright law has many flaws, in the sense that it is ill-equipped to handle the fact no art is ever 100% original and builds off existing elements, but it exists for a reason, so that artists get their due, you better believe corporations would not compensate us if they could. And minimizing our place in creation is the same mindset

I think it’s also tied to the myth we're born this way, given talent from birth and therefore not really the inventor but merely the executor of our art, negating the amount of training that goes into building skills, and the intellectual labor necessary for any creative work (see: ai bros acting like artists are hoarding drawing skills??), as well as the disregard shown for artistic industry workers anytime there's talks of unionizing (see : caring more about their marvel movies/video games releasing early than making sure crunch is avoided). Some people don’t like to think in depth about neither the context of what they consume nor the breathing bodies that make it come to life (and I understand, cause honestly it makes a lot of stuff depressing, be it food, clothes or art, but it'snecessary sometimes), and seem to think an artist’s relationship to a piece of work is over, all ties severed the moment they publish it, when it is a lifelong and everchanging relationship that takes labour to bear

On another topid so much of art is made of collaboration and merging intellectual properties and building off other people’s work i would like to beat up the myth of the lone genius artist or the mastermind director who deserves all the credit for his big brain, all projects would be nothing without the teams making them happen and an artist with no fellow creative friends literally will shrivel up so pls start putting all the people working in artistic fields on an equal footing, financially speaking too, i am begging society to stop disrespecting craftspeople too btw-

Okay so I’m actually putting real amounts of thought into my au, which I will now be calling my “Forest Au”

Random tid bits and lore under the cut

So Splinter is staying a rat, but instead of growing up in the city, they grew up in the forest near April’s farm house, so they grew up with April seeing her once a year when she went on vacation with her family, until of course, her mom went ‘missing’ and she stopped going there during the summers, which made the turtles pretty sad ngl.

Okay So. Splinter is rat, got mutated in his 20’s by the time the story starts he’s in like his mid 30’s or smth I haven’t done the math.

The turtles were all mutates at different times, splinter found/adopted them at the same time and they were all mutated right after hatching.

Mikey and Leo are the youngest, Mikey is 8 months older than Leo, at the beginning of the story Leo is 12 and it’s 2 months till his birthday, Mikey is 13, Donnie is 14, and Raph is 16.

Raph and splinter have a pretty rocky relationship, Raph was Raph was like 4 when they first met splinter, and he was his usual hyper protective brother self so he didn’t warm up to the man all too easily, he still struggles to view splinter as a father a not a kind of caretaker.

Raph being a more aquatic turtle (he was mutates specifically for aquatic defense/fighting) spends a lot of time underwater, every day he takes a ‘water break’ that usually lasts about an hour or so, during these breaks Leo ‘fills in’ as he likes to call it. Leo doesn’t have any weapons yet, but he’s a pretty good fighter with just his fists and he’s been training with dummy swords and sticks

Donnie is still a little genius and he’s very much an inventor, his supplies are limited as is his general information range, for most of their lives they lived in some random hole in the ground, most of Donnie’s research was done love, in person, he’d document the behaviors of plants and animals he found in the wild, because of this he’s pretty good with animals and they tend to like him

Mikey is still very much artistic but he’s had to mostly rely on what was around him, so he was mostly just drawing with sticks and dirt or using the plants around him to work as materials for sculptures or collages, he once made a portrait of Leo using nothing but random berries be found in the woods (all of which were deemed toxic by Donnie)

Donnie became the main food getter, Raph being a carnivore and also the one with the most training (at the age of 5 of course) would get them all various meats of various livelihoods (he did the cat thing of catching half dead things so the babies could learn how to hunt) but Donnie insisted on getting plants too, so he figured which plants were poisonous and which weren’t by watching other animals to see which plants they ate and which they didn’t

What if Cunning used to be a circus artist travelling with his troupe and he was on his way to become the next ringmaster, when one day when he was out the entire place went up in flames despite the strict restrictions and since then, he is looking for the culprit. Several miles away a very enthusiastic inventor witnessed one of his inventions get off the curve he had calculated and crash into something. Even back then Joker was a coward so he did not check out the place, he just ran. Several days later he sneaked back at night to see the remnants of a circus and got hit by the guilt that his harmless invention hurt people. Ever since that he chose to held himself back from inventing new things and kept himself to repair jobs. One day Cunning asks for his help and the two finally meet because fate is cruel. Apparently, Cunning had found the culprit and seeks revenge but in order to achieve that he needs the help of the genius inventor. Joker reluctantly agrees, but understands the root of Mike's hatred much later and when realization hits, he is already too deep in Mike's plans.

That little code, which honestly wasn’t little at all and it would have been called a marvel, a genius invention had it gotten discovered, was never meant to be triggered.

So when the warehouses had gotten filled to the brim, when the machines got the feedback to stop and wait until there was new space available, they idled for a while. It had happened sometimes, back when no one had expected them to be so effective and successful.

The warehouses had filled up too fast and so, to avoid struggling with the load of resources, people had made a communication code between the warehouse cataloging system and the mining machines to make them stop if inventory was full.

But…the order to resume never came. As time ticked, that back-up-code kicked in for the first time since its existence. And the machines, which had stood still for so long, began to move once again.

One after another, a code written for fun, written on a dare, written while its creator giggled and laughed and felt both foolish and daring, woke up an entire system of connected machines.

They worked, the mined resources were processed and refined and then used. One after another, bit by bit, the machines didn’t just finish their work and drop it off to be picked up by a ship that would never come again.

They began to build, instead.

It was all automated, but there was a steady beauty in it anyway, the machines repairing themselves as they kept going, moving from asteroid to asteroid, from planet to planet, an endless cycle of work, repurposed into something different.

And when, years and years later, a space ship arrived, they found a world they thought dead, but upon looking closer, they realized something precious had been left behind.

In the wake of machinery, statues littered every surface. Great inventors and poets and musicians, followed by inspiring leaders and great souls.

There were other people too. Everyday people who had built the backbone of society. Who had been quiet heroes and helpers and shepherds of the future.

Teachers and janitors, office workers and artists of all skills and craft, children and adults and the elderly.

Every person who had ever lived, who had ever gotten documented online, stood there in their glory, holding what they were known for in their hands.

Beakers and pens and brushes, papers and instruments and books, chisels and screwdrivers and circuits, paint and juggling balls, sports equipment and microphones. Some were somber, some laughed, some looked neutral.

And at their feet, etched into a plate, was a name and quote, even if it had been pulled from long gone social media pages. It let anyone who looked know who the person had been.

And in their very middle, the first statues to be built, were a certain intern’s family and friends, a group placed together, surrounding the one who had unknowingly fulfilled humanities greatest wish.

The intern who had written a complex, incredible piece of code for fun, had long since died, was long since gone, but their imprint remained, their cave carving, their handprint in clay, their hope pressed against the surface of the world.

They had been here. Humanity had been here and though they were long gone, they would never be forgotten. They would be remembered for generations upon generations to come.

A galaxy of cave carvings and handprints and music and stories and inventions laid at the feet of the spaceship. Everything was still preserved, just like humanity had hoped with every grasp for the stars.

Even though their bones had long since turned to dust, their machines having fallen still and silent after having found no more places to mine, this remained.

The spirit, the life, the soul of humanity could still be observed, preserved in stone and metal and numerous other materials and it was swiftly getting protected and documented by their unexpected visitors.

All other races and galaxies came to know that humanity loved like no other, was stubborn and fierce and passionate like no other.

And if one asked if the code that had built countless monuments to humanity had a name, they were told with fond smiles that it read: ‘My friend dared me to do this, so Claire, this is for you. Love you, you giant idiot.’

And this, at the end of the day, was the greatest handprint humanity left on the universe at large, a song brighter than any other, a story more vivid than any that came after, a cave carving so grand it awed any who looked at it: Love.

Humanity, at the end of the day, was made of love and it echoed across time and space, even as its people were no more."

Humanity had devised a perfect offworld resource mining system. The machines go in, resources are sent to earth, and the surplus is used to replicate and repair, before they set off to another planet. It was an automated marvel and horrifyingly cheap. Now mankind is gone, but not the machines.
